The word attorney is heard a lot, but what is an attorney? The word attorney is mentioned in reference to multiple people in different positions who have different jobs and responsibilities. Holde was sworn in as the eighty-second Attorney General of the United States. The Attorney General serves as the chief law enforcer of the Federal Government and is the head of the Department of Justice. Attorneys in fact are people that are legally able to act on anthers behalf in business or legal situations. When people refer to attorneys they are generally referring to attorneys at law. An attorney at law, also known as a lawyer, is an individual who represents clients in court as well as advises clients on legal matters. There are attorneys that specialize in different areas of the law including civil law, family law, criminal law, corporate law, and real estate law. An attorney who specializes in civil law is primarily concerned with the rights of individuals. Civil law often refers to cases involving civil rights including hate crime based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, etc. Real estate attorneys deal with property, construction, and building and are employed when individuals are buying, selling or exchanging property. If you want to sell your house you are going to eventually have to consult with a real estate lawyer.

To become an attorney an individual must receive a degree from a four year university and then spend three years at law school. When they finish law school they are required to pass the written bar examination. A career as an attorney can be very rewarding, but realize that there is intense competition to get into law school and the competition for jobs is increasing steadily. Approximately twenty-six percent of attorneys are self employed and run their own firm or are a partner in a firm. Attorneys are required to do a lot of research on a daily basis. It is essential for attorneys to locate, review and understand any information that may be relevant to the case that they are working on.
Hiring an attorney is expensive and there are people do not have the ability to spend money on hiring someone to represent them or provide legal assistance. There are societies and organizations that will provide legal services to individuals who are at or below the poverty live. Such societies include The Legal Aid Society and the New York Legal Assistance Group. Both groups provide attorneys to individuals who can not afford to pay for one themselves. These societies are available because of donations and well as federal and state funding. Directories of attorneys in your area can be found online.
